ABSTRACT
After years of neglect, the theory of economic growth is again at the centre of much
interest in economics. The endogenous growth theories have contributed much to
focus attention on the endogenous creation of knowledge and on its key role in
assessing the rates of growth of total factor productivity and output of economic
systems (Aghion and Howitt, 1998; Romer, 1986 and 1990).
