ABSTRACT

Most research on S-R compatibility is conducted with the goal of clarifying the mechanisms responsible for such effects. More generally, the concern is to specify the nature of the relation between perception and action. We introduced several models of S-R compatibility in Chapter 1 and have periodically discussed those and other models with respect to specific issues throughout the book. In the present chapter, we provide more detailed consideration of several of the most influential models and approaches in contemporary research. Our intent is to provide a thorough treatment of the alternative views, including their strengths and weaknesses. We also discuss points of agreement and disagreement among the theories and issues in need of resolution.
