ABSTRACT

While o ther large-scale projects like the World Values Surveys (WVS) have also used their own gender-role items, I focus here on the ISSP because it offers several advantages with regard bo th to the construction and evaluation of functionally equivalent measures. T h e ISSP is a co-operative effort between nat ional general social surveys of different countries which annually p repare a quest ionnaire for one thematic topic and conduct their surveys in a similar manner . To date the ISSP has twenty-nine members a round the world, including:
