ABSTRACT

I have considered Qureshi’s chapter in the context of Brown’s 1 contribution. Brown engaged, inter alia, in a study of the slipperiness of political and economic rhetoric about sovereignty, free trade, the relationship between the free market and types of political structures. He concluded with a discussion of differing British and German perspectives on what was implied by intensifying free trade in Europe. Does it have to mean federal political union? The British tradition, going back to Adam Smith, would be more inclined to try to separate the political from the economic. The German tradition, since Kant, felt that economic freedom and liberal, democratic government had to go together. Economic union implies political union.
