To anticipate the behavior of the floor rock, the knowledge of the stress-strain relationship and hence parameters such as Young’s modulus and Poisson ratio is not necessary. In the theory formulated by this method, the floor of the face is assumed to be a base whose length approaches infinity, so that plane strength assumptions hold true.
