Reason and emotion

Haste’s insight, that ‘[i]n the dualistic view of mind versus body, the tension between rational and emotional is closely interwoven with sexuality’ (Haste 1993: 164), sums up some of the common ground in the subjects of this and the following chapter. This chapter seeks to identify a range of connections between reason and emotion which are undervalued and often unacknowledged in mainstream theorizing, in order to substantiate the claim for the recognition of a broader notion of rationality which encompasses emotion. In Chapter Three the double gendering of sexuality is addressed, in the dichotomies of masculine/feminine and heterosexual/homosexual.
