The public interest: Ritual and ceremonial, from passage graves to henges

The starting point for this discussion is provided by the megalithic tombs of the Boyne valley in Ireland. O n the inside these are characterised by passage graves of the kind whose origins were discussed in Chapter 4. Externally, they take the form of precisely circular mounds. It is that element of circularity that I shall consider in the remaining chapters of this book.
