ABSTRACT

The views of health professionals on the nature of a healthy diet for diabetes have changed remarkably over the past two decades. The traditional view was that a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism merited a low-carbohydrate diet. When such a view was questioned in the 1970s, research was initiated on the effects of a high-carbohydrate/lowfat diet as opposed to a low-carbohydrate/high-fat and high-protein diet. The results prompted a dramatic change in dietary recommendations for diabetic patients (recently updated in the UK1).
