ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the management of all insulin treated patients-those with ketosis prone insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and those with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) requiring insulin for effective blood glucose control. All patients requiring insulin treatment should be referred to the diabetologist for advice and the diabetes nurse specialist for education and support. However, many practices are now taking on the long-term follow-up of these patients or operating a shared care policy.
