ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter briefly outlines those aspects of diabetes mellitus pertinent to shared care between the primary and secondary health care sectors. Further details can be found in later chapters and in the suggested further reading and references. This introduction concentrates on definition and classification of diabetes, its aetiology, pathology and epidemiology. Finally, the goals of treatment in the context of recent studies and in the light of the St Vincent Declaration are reviewed.
