ABSTRACT

Although the apparent aims of bone cell biologists, physicians and orthopaedic surgeons differ widely, they are all concerned with understanding the control of the amount and strength of bone. For the future, the most important achievement would be the prevention of structural failure and the reduction of fracture rate. This will not be done easily. It will mean increasing the strength of bone and decreasing the rate of injury predominantly from falls in later years. Significant advances will require much financial support.
