ABSTRACT

Wrist fractures display a different pattern of occurrence from hip or spine fractures8. In White women, rates increase linearly between 40 and 65 years of age and then stabilize. In men, the incidence remains constant between 20 and 80 years. The reason for the plateau in female incidence remains obscure, but may relate to a change in the pattern of falling with advancing age. As in the case of hip fracture, most wrist fractures occur in women and around one-half occur among women aged 65 years and over. The winter peak in wrist fracture incidence is even greater than that seen for hip fracture.
