ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. OA is a noninflammatory/degenerative symmetrical polyarthropathy which most commonly affects large joints such as the hips, knees and shoulders. It can also affect the hands, especially the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints. Bony lumps may appear on the fingers, on the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints (Bouchard’s nodes) or DIP joints (Heberden’s nodes), or the 1st metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint at the thumb base. There are no extra-articular features.
