ABSTRACT

The 1980s and the early 1990s saw bank crises in many countries. Many industrialised countries, most developing countries and economies moving from central planning to market-oriented systems experienced some degree of bank crisis. Of the 181 such countries reviewed by Lindgren and others in 1996, 133 had experienced significant banking sector problems at some stage during the past fifteen years (Lindgren et al. 1996:20).
