Information about Britain’s population is essential for an understanding of the major social, economic and political issues of the 1990s. Basic facts about the structure of population by age-group and sex, the distribution of people within the country and particularly the underlying trends in popu lation growth and changing patterns of demographic behaviour, have a direct influence on policy formation and decision-making by central and local government.
