ABSTRACT
In the previous three chapters we have considered the writings of historical sociologists who have made use of a concept of the international system in their analyses. I have been critical of all three writers because of the vague and contradictory ways in which they have defined and made use of the term. In all three cases, the lack of a clear definition has necessitated an interpretation of their understanding of ‘international system’ from the role it plays in their writings.
