ABSTRACT

Dictionaries are the ultimate word-books, and often are associated with some of the magic of words, in that 'the' dictionary (as if there were only one!) is often assumed to be infallible. In Figures 12.1 to 12.3, brief extracts from three dictionaries are presented. In each case the section of the dictionary starting at the word ding and ending with the word dingy is given. One of the dictionaries is Australian, one is American and one is British. We shall refer to them simply as MD, OD and MW.
