ABSTRACT
The purpose of carotid endarterectomy is the prevention of stroke. The role of the operation has been well established by prospective, randomized studies in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients (1-3). Newer antiplatelet agents, while effective, have not supplanted operation. Carotid dilatation and stenting is currently undergoing scrutiny in a prospective study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.
