ABSTRACT

The percentage of Hong Kong female managers and administrators in 1996 was 23.4 per cent (Census and Statistics Department 1997a:93). Although the figure seems to be ahead of some other Asian countries, such as 2.2 per cent in Japan (Steinhoff and Tanaka 1994:86), 9.5 per cent in Taiwan (Cheng and Liao 1994:149), and 16.0 per cent in Singapore (Chan and Lee 1994:130), the territory still lagged behind some western countries. The percentage of managers and administrators who are female was 41.5 per cent in the United States (Fagenson and Jackson 1994:389), 33 per cent in Canada (Andrew et al. 1994:378), and 30.6 per cent in Britain (Hammond and Holton 1994:228).
