ABSTRACT

Stories of successful new ventures and well-known entrepreneurs are often reported in the mass media. Hong Kong is remarked on as a desirable place for establishing small enterprises because it offers ample business opportunities to anyone who likes to take risks and work hard to achieve the goal of running their own business. But, while a favourable environment provides strong support for the initial setting up of a small business, sustainable development depends on the personal qualities, abilities and skills of the entrepreneur. In other words, both the enterprise culture as well as the characteristics of the entrepreneurs themselves help to explain why Hong Kong has been so successful in its economic development.
