ABSTRACT
In 1955, when Austria committed itself to neutrality (13), the USSR urged Germany to do the same, but its propaganda about neutrality led to stirrings in eastern Europe, and in 1956 Hungary tried to become neutral. The Soviet army crushed this Hungarian revolution – at a moment when the world’s attention was distracted by the Suez conflict (42).
