ABSTRACT
In 1978 the Egyptian and Israeli leaders met as President Carter’s guests at Camp David, his rural retreat north-west of Washington. In 1979 they signed a peace treaty based on the ‘Camp David agreements’. The benefits it brought Egypt included large amounts of American aid as well as the recovery of Sinai. Israel, for the first time in its existence, was at peace with one of its immediate neighbours.
