ABSTRACT

What can be reasonably said on this question from a scientific point of view when it is not a concrete situation for which an answer is needed (which then might very well be given in a unique and definite form)? What one can offer-and what I am going to do-is to enumerate the most important varieties of exogenous conditions and modifying circumstances which make this or that effect of wages on employment probable. I shall present my-far from complete-enumeration in several subgroups, but it should be noted that these subgroups can be connected in various ways. In concrete situations one has to diagnose which actual combination can be applied-by no means an easy task.
