ABSTRACT
The shear and the generalised centrifugal instability apply to isolated vortices. Elliptic and hyperbolic instability involve an extra straining effect due to surrounding vortices or to mean shear. The newly discovered Zigzag instability also originates from the straining effect due to surrounding vortices or to mean shear but is a “displacement mode” involving large horizontal scales but small vertical scales.
