ABSTRACT

Pain is an aversive sensory and emotional experience that is usually, though not necessarily, associated with physical damage to the body’s tissues. It may be experienced as a dull ache, sharp and stabbing, throbbing and itching or as a burning sensation. Whilst pain is a normal and common phenomenon occurring throughout life, Karoly (1985) points out that it is the most pervasive symptom found in medical practice and is the most common reason why individuals seek medical advice.
