ABSTRACT
A year after the termination of the Russo-Japanese War, General Sir John French, then commander of the Aldershot Military District, commented on a lecture he presented on the lessons of the war. Advocating meticulous study of this conflict and basing his judgment on its lessons, he anticipated a future war to be stationary and firepower oriented, with maneuverability possible only under the cover of darkness.1
