ABSTRACT
Introduction Industrial activity is a welcome source of employment, wealth and useful products, but at times it is also a source of accidents and is dangerous to human life, industrial plants and entire ecosystems. Accidents vary
both in frequency and the extent of damage they cause. Although technically it is possible to reduce both these factors markedly, a completely accident-free society remains a utopian ideal none the less.
