ABSTRACT
Czech foundations are a part of the package of institutions and social values that returned to Czech society with the fall of communism. An older domestic philanthropic tradition combines with models adopted from Western liberal democracies to produce specifically post-communist types of foundations. Czech foundations are also significant actors in the process of post-communist transformation and it is precisely this transformation that provides the key to a deeper understanding of the roles Czech foundations want to, and do, play.
