ABSTRACT
Poetry is rhythmic sound married to meaning. Without sound, poetry ceases to exist as such. In written form it is like sheet music, waiting to come to life in performance. This means, of course, that Catullus should be read out loud (the ancient Romans did not read silently), and the sound should be naturally rhythmic.
