ABSTRACT
The forms and usages learned in basic Latin courses reflect a standardization imposed on Latin prose during and soon after the Augustan age. In order to feel comfortable with the Latin Catullus wrote, it will help to know some of the common variants in use a generation before other standards were adopted. Many of these usages continued in later poetry because of the flexibility and euphony they provided.
