ABSTRACT

The influence of the subject coordinator is crucial in ensuring well-planned and coherent provision and in maintaining balanced progress.

This final chapter draws together the threads of what ‘making progress in English’ implies for the English coordinator. Although the job description will vary from school to school, there are general areas which are commonly understood to be part of the English coordinator’s role and responsibility. While the English coordinator can be expected to be up to date in subject teaching knowledge, be responsible for collating, developing and reviewing policy and monitoring its implementation, support and inform colleagues, oversee English resources, ensure English assessments are in line with school policy and communicate effectively with parents, governors and colleagues, there are some roles which a coordinator cannot be expected to fulfil. For example, the coordinator may be able to support colleagues, but cannot be expected to enforce changes which are part of school policy; that is the role of the headteacher. The English coordinator will plan for curriculum development, but only the headteacher can arrange for time and resources to put those developments into practice.
