ABSTRACT

Much heat has been generated over the past few years about standards of reading and above all about the best way to teach reading. One unfortunate aspect of the debate has been that attention has been focused on methods or materials rather than dealing with the essential matter of what children, teachers and parents understand reading to be. Glib oppositions have often been made between starting children off on reading by using either a ‘real books’ or a ‘phonics’ approach.
