ABSTRACT

So far the type of association we have dealt with has been the club – a single unit, usually based in a city, preserving its own individual autonomy even when associated with an umbrella organisation such as the National Council of Girls’ Clubs or the Working Men’s Club and Institute Union and, in many cases where women are specifically concerned, attracting mainly either the well-off or professionals. However, there are three bodies which we think deserve discussion in this context: although not clubs in any real sense, they have served a similar function of bringing together for social, intellectual and political purposes women whose circumstances lie outside those of typical club members. They are the Women’s Co-operative Guild, the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, and the National Union of Townswomen’s Guilds. <target id="page_107" target-type="page">107</target>Jubilee souvenir of the Women's Co-operative Guild, 1933 https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780203029015/25837369-c20c-4bda-a6c2-abc569b454ac/content/fig7_1_B.jpg"/>
