ABSTRACT
The ‘Critical essays’ shift the problem of belief from the subjects studied to the scholars reporting on their studies. Some of the essays still seem to have been on the right track. Some of them are substantially right but fail to give due praise, some are actually wrong. I have added my obituary notice of Godfrey Lienhardt at the end to give a fair idea of what 1960s anthropology could achieve.
