ABSTRACT

A composer has to consider how the use of musical elements contributes to the overall musical impact of the piece. A group improvising play with particular aspects of the music’s structurerhythmic or melodic ideas perhaps-create the ‘drama’ of their music out of these. Performers make decisions about tempo, dynamics, and timbre which are based on their understanding of how choices about those elements will work in conjunction with the rhythmic or melodic patternings of the music to create the final effect on a listener. Making music always requires a bringing together of an understanding of the music’s own structures with our musical response to the effect they create.
