ABSTRACT

With some experience behind them children will be ready to try a ‘joining-in’ piece. To begin with, it may be easier for the teacher to join in and be the first to play.

One player begins. The others listen and then join in one at a time. Don’t rush to join in too soon. Listen to the music that’s already going on before deciding what to play. Continue playing and try to keep listening. Discuss and try out different ways of finishing the music, for example: dropping out in turn; watching the first player and stopping all together when they do; fading out the music gradually.
