ABSTRACT

Clear evidence of the hybridity of social and cultural identity practices is the distinctiveness of local youth cultures in non-western countries and the selective choices evident in this cultural production. This chapter examines cultural hybridity in the lifestyles of devout young Muslims in Indonesia – how their distinctive youth culture includes both religious law and global popular culture trends. Data gathered from focus groups with Muslim youth in Sulawesi reveals the antithesis to western cultural hegemony, which they claim leads to moral decline of young people, and threatens Islamic cultural values. Survey data on popular culture preferences of Javanese high school students is used to consider these claims.
