ABSTRACT

One of the worst years in the North Atlantic from this point of view was 1972, when as many as 1587 bergs found their way south of the 48th parallel. Another bad year, closely approaching these statistics, was 1912 when, on April 14th, the Titanic foundered in 41° 46′ N, 50° 14′ w with the loss of 1517 lives.
