ABSTRACT

As a theme of joint European sociology; although suffering from sociological neglect, I would like to focus on the present, on what has happened in our midst: the Balkan tragedy. How do we, European sociologists, confront the worst tragedy on our continent since World War II, the revival of regional wars, of ethnic cleansing resulting in the thousands of refugees now shuffied around in what they once thought was their own country? While the European Union strives for greater social integration in one half of Europe, in another not too distant part of the continent the worst imaginable social disintegration has occurred and left us with a massive destruction of history; of culture and of artefacts.
