ABSTRACT

Our new teacher [in Grade 6] . . . wrote down lots of rules and the highlight was that we all wrote in pencil, and were all dying to begin writing in pen. So Mr Dankielo made a deal with us. Every morning for one hour we were given spelling cards. Then each one we got completed he would check the spelling and the way we wrote. If it was good enough spelling and was readable enough, we were presented with a pen licence. . . . Our teacher told us that if our writing failed, he would take away our licence and give it back again when he thought our writing picked up again. It kept all of us determined to keep our licence.
