ABSTRACT

In every country which attempts to conserve parts of its built form through legislative control, the detailed form and wording of that legislation, and the manner of its change over time, are crucial. Chapter 2 showed some generalities in the historical development of legislation, but this was illustrative of the general rising trend towards conservation as a field of interest amongst the public and relevant professions. Chapter 3 introduced some of the confusing legislative detail together with discussion of wider societal trends affecting legislative development. This chapter discusses some of the important minutiae. The precise and detailed wording of legislation, once passed, may seem trivial to the public, those whose involvement is generally limited to heritage tourism and building appreciation. However, to those deeply involved in the practicalities of conservation, words do matter.
