ABSTRACT

These two passages demonstrate that after the Lenaian Wasps of 422 Aristophanes made his return to the stage with Peace. It is also known that Peace competed at the Dionysia of 421. Aristophanes, therefore, although present with two comedies at the Lenaia of 422, took part neither in the Dionysia of 422 won by Kantharos (cf. IG II.22318, 115), nor in the Lenaia of 421, in which Eupolis presented Marikas (cf. scholion Clouds 552). As previously observed, it is not clear whether Argument VI.7 to Clouds implies that Aristophanes was denied permission to participate at the Dionysia of 422 with the Second Clouds.
