ABSTRACT

The criterion for classifying an explorer as a landsman is a substantial duration of time spent on the Antarctic Continent. The term ‘substantial’ is somewhat arbitrary, but most would concede that Carsten Borchgrevink’s British Antarctic Expedition of 1898-1900 deserves the accolade of being the first group to spend a significant time on the continent. They built their hut at Cape Adare, and this testifies to the fact that they intended a considerable stay.
