ABSTRACT

In order to understand the response of South-West Birmingham to the challenge of political and economic restructuring it is necessary to know something about the peculiarities of this locality. South-West Birmingham consists of the eight contiguous wards of Selly Oak, Bournville, Weoley, Bartley Green, Brandwood, Kings Norton, Northfield and Longbridge and has a population of approximately 200000. These suburbs of Birmingham stretch out on either side of the Bristol Road, which dissects the locality diagonally from Selly Oak to Longbridge.
