ABSTRACT

Though commercial logging on Siberut was under way by at least 1914, it was not until the early 1970s that these activities increased significantly in scale. In 1973 the (~ntire island was divided into concession areas. Conservation efforts were virtually absent at that time and it would take a couple of years before they were formulated. By 1992 however all concessions were terminated and a large part of the island was declared a national park.
