ABSTRACT
The first chapter dealt with a study of the concept of diglossia and recent research in Arabic sociolinguistics. In that chapter, I explained the objective of this study - examining variation and relating it to speech function in Arabic political discourse - and positioned the study within current Arabic sociolinguistic research.
