ABSTRACT

EARLY LINKS BETWEEN INDIA AND 'THE WEST' There would be few among those whose cultural roots are in Western Europe who would be aware that links between India and 'the West' antedate the Christian era. Those acquainted with the Asian expedition of Alexander the Great, between 336 and 323 BC, realise that it took him as far as the Hyphasis River in North-West India, where a mutiny among his soldiers put a stop to the push to the east. However, there seems little interest in what happened to those of Alexander's army who, for one reason or another, elected to remain and establish kingdoms in Mghanistan and North-West India. Nor has there been much interest in those who followed the Indus River to its mouth and settled there.
