ABSTRACT

It is a Saturday afternoon in July. It is hot and the sun is unbearably sharp, so for the first few hours after lunch the health station is just as empty as the paddy fields around it, standing quiet and deserted with its yellow faded walls and dried-out herb garden. But now in the late afternoon, as the sun hangs low in the sky, losing a bit of its power, women start arriving and sit waiting on the porch outside the room for gynaecological examinations. The health station does not have running water, so a water container with a tap is placed outside the examination room for the staff to wash their hands in between clients.
