I These interesting articles, giving a quantity of most interesting and valuable information regarding Japan, have been written by Shigetaka Shiga, naturalist on board H.LM. Japanese war vessel Tsukuba. [It is ?] Not long since the question of opening up a market for our wool with China was much talked about. It is open to question whether in Japan, despite its much smaller population, a far better market would not be found. The Japanese are, as a nation, much in advance of China, and are imbued with a spirit of progress which furnishes an instructive contrast to the dogged conservatism of the Chinese. The resources, institutions, population, and progress of Japan will be admirably seen from the interesting tables of statistics attached to these articles.
