ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses technological changes that provide the infrastructure for and promote the convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting. The technical innovations that are affecting the said convergence all stem from ever advancing semi-conductor technology and the accompanying development of various digital technologies, such as digital computing, digital signal processing, digital telecommunications and digital storage equipment. The convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting is the result of synergies, in this sense, between contents and computers and between contents and networks. There are a large number of technologies being standardized in the fields of computers, networks and contents. Of particular relevance to our topic, the convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting, are coding technologies such as JPEG for still picture coding, MPEG for moving picture coding and MHEG for multimedia and Hypermedia coding and engine.
